US Issues Security Alert for Citizens in Bangladesh Ahead of Elections
The United States has issued a “security alert” for American citizens in Bangladesh as the country gears up for parliamentary elections and a national referendum on February 12. The advisory warns US citizens to remain vigilant and avoid crowds due to the potential threat of political violence or extremist attacks targeting rallies, polling stations, and religious sites.
The US Embassy in Bangladesh has instructed its citizens to exercise caution and avoid demonstrations during the election period. They are advised to stay away from large gatherings and remain vigilant at all times.
With the upcoming elections, the Bangladesh government has imposed restrictions on transportation, including a ban on motorcycles on February 10 and a complete halt on all transportation on February 11 and 12. The US Embassy in Dhaka will also have limited onsite services during this time.
US citizens are urged to review their security plans, plan for alternative travel routes, and maintain a low profile during this sensitive period. The advisory emphasizes the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions to ensure personal safety.
International Observers and Political Landscape
As Bangladesh prepares for its 13th general election, nearly 2,000 candidates from various political parties are vying for 300 parliamentary seats. The country has invited election observers from 16 countries to monitor the electoral process and ensure transparency.
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has emerged as a frontrunner in the political landscape following the disbandment of deposed premier Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League last year. The US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent T Christensen, recently met with Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman to discuss the upcoming elections and reaffirm the US commitment to promoting peace and prosperity in Bangladesh.
Despite the ongoing political tensions, efforts are being made to maintain stability and security during the election period. The safety and well-being of all citizens, including foreign nationals, are of utmost importance as Bangladesh navigates through this crucial phase of its democratic process.
