US President Donald Trump Reacts to New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani’s Victory Speech
Following New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s victory speech, US President Donald Trump has shared his thoughts, emphasizing the need for a new understanding between the mayor-elect and Washington to avoid potential setbacks.
In response to a question from a Fox News reporter, Trump expressed a somewhat softened stance, expressing his desire for Mamdani to succeed as he holds a deep affection for New York. However, he reiterated his previous characterization of the mayor-elect as a “communist.”
Trump conveyed conflicting sentiments, stating, “You know, I’m so torn because I would like to see the new mayor do well because I love New York. I really love New York. When I left New York for Washington, New York was doing really well. But there were some bad signs. The bad sign was a guy named Bill de Blasio. So the signs of de Blasio, that was the beginning and it was bad. This one we’re going to look for a thousand years. Communism has not worked.”
Reflecting on Mamdani’s victory speech in Brooklyn, Trump characterized it as “very angry” and advised the mayor-elect to maintain a positive rapport with the President.
During his address, Mamdani directly referenced Trump, asserting, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.” He further challenged Trump by stating, “I have four words for him: Turn the volume up.”
Mamdani’s triumph in the New York City mayoral race, marked by a record two million voter turnout, saw him defeat independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who enjoyed support from Trump and Elon Musk, as well as Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
The Democrats’ victory in this race has provided them with a significant advantage leading up to the 2026 midterm elections.
In the aftermath of Mamdani’s win, Trump expressed concern over the loss of “sovereignty” in the United States. He warned of New York City’s alleged descent into communism and pledged to address this issue without specifying his plans.
Addressing his supporters in Miami, Trump highlighted the city as a potential haven for those fleeing communism in New York, emphasizing the choice between “communism and common sense” and the implications for the country’s economic future.
