US President Trump Praises Historic Trade Deal with India
US President Donald Trump has lauded the recently signed trade deal with India as “historic.” Trump emphasized that America is set to significantly increase its coal exports to India and other nations with which it has trade agreements.
During an event titled ‘Champion of Coal,’ Trump highlighted the progress made in expanding energy exports under his administration. He noted, “We’re now exporting coal all over the world, and the quality of our coal is considered to be the finest anywhere.”
The trade deal between the US and India includes a framework for an interim agreement aimed at enhancing bilateral trade. As part of this agreement, India has committed to reducing or eliminating tariffs on American industrial goods, food products, and agricultural items. Additionally, India has pledged to purchase USD 500 billion worth of US products over the next five years.
In a joint statement, both countries expressed their intention to strengthen trade ties through reciprocal and mutually beneficial measures. India’s commitment to buying USD 500 billion of US energy products, aircraft, technology goods, and coking coal signifies a significant step towards enhancing economic cooperation.
The framework also underscores the ongoing negotiations for the broader US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). These negotiations, initiated by President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2025, aim to further enhance market access and bolster resilient supply chains between the two nations.
