Understanding Academic Titles and Hierarchy in Higher Education
By Dr. Ashraf Zainabi
Colleges and universities are institutions where words hold significance, and titles hold even more weight.
Titles such as Prof., Dr., Mr., and Ms. not only signify knowledge but also indicate responsibility and position within the academic realm.
However, a prevalent confusion persists in higher education, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, surrounding these academic prefixes.
Something as seemingly trivial as naming conventions is, in fact, undermining the clarity, credibility, and academic integrity of the educational system.
For instance, the title “Professor” is often misused in classrooms where individuals with postgraduate degrees or NET/SET qualifications are informally addressed as such.
Despite this common practice, it is essential to recognize that “Professor” is a formal academic rank that is bestowed upon individuals through official appointments or promotions in accordance with University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.
Similarly, the prefix “Dr.” is associated with individual academic achievements, particularly those who hold recognized PhDs, regardless of their employment status.
It is crucial to differentiate between eligibility, qualifications, and rank within academia to maintain the integrity of the educational system.
Addressing teachers as Mr. or Ms. is equally respectful and does not diminish their roles or expertise in any way.
While this confusion may stem from habits of respect and courtesy, it is essential for educational institutions to clarify and uphold the correct usage of academic titles.
Official guidance and clear rules regarding the use of titles such as Dr. and Professor can help maintain professionalism and accuracy within academia.
Titles should accurately reflect individuals’ qualifications and positions, emphasizing the importance of academic achievements and institutional appointments.
Ultimately, respecting the distinctions between these titles is crucial for upholding the standards and credibility of higher education institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
