The FIFA World Cup Trophy Arrives in India
Excitement filled the air as the original FIFA World Cup trophy made its way to India as part of its global tour leading up to the 2026 tournament. The prestigious trophy was unveiled in a ceremony attended by former Brazilian World Cup winner, Gilberto D’Silva, and Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya.
D’Silva expressed his belief that the trophy’s presence in India would inspire young football enthusiasts to pursue the sport with the same passion as cricket. He emphasized the potential for the next generation of players, both male and female, to excel in football as they have in other sports.
After a 12-year absence, the World Cup trophy returned to India for a three-day tour organized by Coca-Cola, the official partner of the FIFA World Cup. The trophy will spend time in Delhi before traveling to Guwahati, Assam.
Government’s Commitment to Sports Development
Minister Mandaviya highlighted the government’s dedication to fostering a sports culture in India, a country with a vast youth population. He outlined initiatives such as the ‘Fit India Movement’ and ‘Khelo India’, aimed at promoting fitness and grassroots sports development.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, sports have become a national priority, with the goal of positioning India among the top ten sporting nations by 2036. Sports are seen as a crucial element in the nation-building process and empowering the youth.
Coca-Cola’s Role in Promoting Sports
Sanket Ray, President of Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, emphasized the company’s commitment to sports as a pillar of national development. Coca-Cola’s association with the FIFA World Cup since 1978 underscores its dedication to promoting sports globally.
Through the trophy’s international journey, spanning 30 FIFA member countries and 75 stops, fans have the unique opportunity to engage with the thrill of football. The trophy itself, crafted from 18-carat solid gold and weighing 6.175 kg, features a design dating back to 1974.
As India aims to become a developed nation by 2047, sports will play a pivotal role in achieving this vision, fostering youth empowerment and national pride.
