Srinagar-Jammu National Highway Open for Two-Way Traffic, Slow Movement Reported
On January 15, officials confirmed that the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44) was open for two-way movement of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy vehicles. Despite slow traffic flow at certain stretches due to single-lane road conditions, the highway saw continuous vehicular movement in both directions throughout the day.
Key congestion points included Balli Nullah, Dewal, Nashri-Dalwas, Maroog, and Kishtwari Pather between Udhampur and Banihal. The situation was exacerbated by the breakdown of two heavy vehicles at different locations, leading to delays.
Authorities in Ramban district managed traffic flow, with hundreds of vehicles crossing the Chenani-Nashri and Banihal-Qazigund tunnels by late Thursday evening. A fresh advisory reiterated that the highway would remain open for LMVs and heavy vehicles, contingent on favorable weather conditions and good road conditions.
Travel Advisory for Safe Journey
Drivers were advised to plan their travel during daylight hours and avoid night journeys due to the risk of shooting stones and landslides. Construction work between Ramban and Banihal sectors could also cause inconvenience to commuters. It was stressed that maintaining lane discipline, following traffic regulations, and avoiding overtaking or driving on the wrong side would help prevent traffic jams and delays.
Traffic Police personnel, along with district police and highway patrol units, were stationed at major choke points to regulate traffic and ensure safe vehicle movement. Travellers were urged to stay updated with the latest traffic advisories before starting their journey.
Other Highway Updates
While the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open, the Kishtwar-Sinthan Top-Anantnag National Highway was closed due to fresh snowfall.
