Rising Tuition Fees and Changing Trends in International Education
In a recent report published by ApplyBoard, a technology platform for international student mobility, it has been highlighted that students are reevaluating their study abroad options due to rising tuition fees and stricter proof-of-funds requirements in traditional study destinations.
The report, titled “2026 Trends Report: Building and Rebuilding Global Education,” points out that students are now prioritizing affordability, employability, and policy stability over the prestige of studying in the “big four” destinations – Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia.
According to the report, countries like Germany and Ireland are gaining popularity among international students for their affordability, lower tuition fees, and flexible post-study work opportunities. France and Spain are also seeing a surge in enrolments, supported by housing initiatives and simplified visa processes.
However, the report notes that policy changes in English-speaking countries are impacting the flow of international students. For example, Canada is projected to see a significant decline in study permit and post-graduation work permit issuances. Australia and the UK are also facing challenges due to stricter compliance standards and higher living costs.
Despite the challenges, global demand for international education remains strong. Students and families in India are now closely evaluating the return on investment of studying abroad, focusing on tangible outcomes, affordable education, and post-study work opportunities.
Meti Basiri, co-founder and CEO of ApplyBoard, emphasizes the importance of making informed decisions about where to study and how to build successful global careers in today’s competitive landscape.
The report also highlights the growth of non-anglophone destinations in attracting international students. Countries like Germany, France, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates are implementing reforms to welcome a record number of students and offer clear employment pathways.
Looking ahead, the report projects that global student mobility will continue to grow, potentially reaching 10 million international students by 2030. However, the pathways to studying abroad are expected to become more diversified and economically driven.
Overall, the changing trends in international education reflect a shift towards affordability, employability, and policy consistency as key factors influencing students’ study abroad decisions.~ PTI
