Kashmir’s Border Schools Embrace Psychology-Based STEM Approach
By Syed Sammar Mehdi
Srinagar- A new initiative is underway in Kashmir’s border areas to enhance science education, spearheaded by Government College for Women MA Road Srinagar, which has secured a ₹15 lakh grant from the J&K Science, Technology & Innovation Council.
This program aims to combine hands-on STEM training with psychological insights to empower students in Gurez, Kupwara, and Baramulla.
Part of the council’s Sponsored Research & Extension Programme for 2025-26, the project is titled “Psychology-Driven STEM Learning to Build Scientific Temper in the Border Villages of Kashmir.”
The strategy positions Srinagar as the pilot center before expanding to districts where access to specialized training is limited.
Dr. Eshrat Ara from the Psychology Department at GCW MA Road and Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rajendran from Mechanical Engineering at NIT Srinagar lead the effort.
The team aims to train 120 teachers and student mentors in practical modules covering drone basics, microcontrollers, low-cost sensors, and 3D printing to introduce advanced tools to classrooms.
Dr. Ara emphasizes shaping thought processes alongside technical skills, encouraging students to question, explore, and approach science with curiosity.
Pop-up innovation camps at border-area schools will directly engage nearly 600 students and impact over 6,000 others, fostering a culture of hands-on learning.
Dr. Rajendran sees the initiative as a confidence booster for children in remote areas, promoting experimentation and creative problem-solving.
Principal Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Farooq commends the grant, highlighting the college’s commitment to inclusive education and empowering young women in STEM fields.
The project aims to uplift underserved regions, preparing students in mountain villages with skills matching national standards and opening new academic pathways.
Ultimately, the initiative invests in the future of border-area youth, nurturing their interest in science and providing guidance and tools for success.
