Empowering India’s Silk Sector: Insights from the Sericulture Directors’ Conference in Bengaluru
In a significant development, a high-level delegation of senior officers from the Sericulture Development Department of Jammu and Kashmir, led by Director General Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, recently participated in a two-day Directors’ Conference of Sericulture Practicing States and Union Territories in Bengaluru.
The conference saw the presence of key officials from the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, representatives from the Central Silk Board, as well as officers from various states and Union Territories. The primary focus of the discussions revolved around devising strategies for sustainable, inclusive, and market-oriented growth of India’s silk sector. Notably, the conference was presided over by Secretary (Textiles), Government of India, Neelam Shami Rao.
During the event, a series of technical and policy-oriented sessions were conducted, emphasizing integrated, technology-driven, and market-linked approaches to bolster the sericulture value chain. Key areas of focus included quality assurance, branding, innovation, and increasing farmers’ income, with a special emphasis on ensuring that development benefits trickle down to grassroots levels, particularly benefiting poor, marginal, and disadvantaged farmers.
One of the notable highlights of the conference was the unveiling of new knowledge-centric publications aimed at empowering stakeholders in the sericulture sector.
