The fisheries sector in Jammu and Kashmir has achieved a remarkable milestone by producing 29.40 thousand metric tonnes of fish in the year 2024-25, with an additional 20.68 thousand metric tonnes produced until November 2025.
Notably, trout farming has played a significant role in boosting the overall fish output, showcasing a consistent growth trend in cold-water fisheries across the picturesque region of Kashmir.
Paving the Way for Future Growth
The state government has unveiled an ambitious plan to double the fish production in the upcoming years. This strategic roadmap includes the modernization of existing hatcheries and the adoption of cutting-edge aquaculture technologies like recirculating aquaculture systems and biofloc systems to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.
By implementing these advanced technological interventions, the authorities aim to increase productivity, reduce water consumption, and facilitate year-round fish farming. Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on fortifying post-harvest management infrastructure to minimize losses and elevate quality standards.
Empowering Fish Farmers and Promoting Economic Growth
The expansion plan is designed to create new income avenues for fish farmers, bolster nutritional security, and stimulate fisheries exports from the region. The government is optimistic that the fisheries sector will play a pivotal role in generating rural livelihoods and fostering economic diversification.
