Tribal Families in Sunjwan: A Struggle for Survival
In the chilly nights of December, amidst the looming threat of wild animals, tribal families in Bermeni, Sunjwan, stand guard outside their temporary shelters. These families, belonging to the Gujjar Muslim community, have endured immense hardships since the flash floods of August forced them out of their homes.
The disaster of August 26–27, 2025, left Lower Bermeni in ruins, displacing 15 families completely and damaging the homes of six others. As they grapple with the aftermath, these families find themselves living under the open sky, adjacent to a dense forest, with little protection from the elements.
Originally settled on state land allotted by the Dogra monarch centuries ago, the tribal community has called Sunjwan home for generations. However, the recent calamity has left them vulnerable and exposed, with many of their houses buried under soil and debris.
Despite efforts by the police and district administration to evacuate them to a safer location, the affected families continue to face dire living conditions in makeshift tents. The lack of basic amenities such as electricity, toilets, and clean water further exacerbates their plight.
Men in the community take turns staying awake at night to protect their families from wild animals, while women and children remain confined inside the vulnerable tents. The fear of snakes and leopards lurks around every corner, making every moment fraught with danger.
One resident, Anu Jan, recalls a harrowing encounter with a snake inside her tent, highlighting the constant threat faced by the families. Despite their resilience and determination to survive, the harsh reality of their situation looms large.
As winter approaches, the challenges only seem to multiply for these families. With no end in sight to their suffering, they continue to cling to hope for a better tomorrow, where they can once again rebuild their lives and homes.
For now, the nights in Bermeni remain filled with uncertainty and fear, as the tribal families brace themselves for whatever challenges the darkness may bring.
