Government Criticized for Delay in Appointing Permanent Chairman for JKBOSE
In Srinagar, the government is facing severe criticism for its failure to appoint a permanent Chairman for the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE). The former chairman’s two-year tenure expired on January 25, 2025, leaving the key institution without a permanent head since then.
Following the former Financial Commissioner of J&K Higher Education Department (HED) manning the post for around a year until his superannuation on December 31, 2025, the JKBOSE has been without a permanent head for the last 10 days, with no interim arrangements made.
The delay in appointing a permanent Chairman has resulted in the postponement of the announcement of the class 10th results by the JKBOSE, which were initially scheduled to be released in the first week of January.
Political leaders and civil society members have criticized the government for neglecting the education sector amidst the delay in appointing a new Chairman for the board.
Apni Party President and former education minister Altaf Bukhari expressed disappointment over the government’s inability to make a decision regarding the appointment of the JKBOSE Chairman for the past year. He emphasized that the academic position should not have become a victim of politics and suggested appointing the Secretary JKBOSE as an interim Chairman until a permanent appointment is made.
Bukhari highlighted that during his tenure as education minister, the Secretary Board was given charge as the Chairman JKBOSE until a new appointment was finalized. He criticized the government for the delay in the appointment process, stating that it reflects the incompetence and lack of seriousness towards the education sector.
People’s Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone expressed lack of surprise at the situation, criticizing the government’s delay in appointing the JKBOSE Chairman and questioning the priorities of the elected government.
Abdul Qayoom Wani, Chairman of J&K Civil Society Forum (JKCSF), condemned the government’s failure to appoint a permanent JKBOSE Chairman, describing it as an act of administrative apathy and political callousness that is affecting the academic future of students.
Wani stressed the detrimental impact of keeping JKBOSE headless on students, causing stress, uncertainty, and disrupting academic schedules and career planning. He called for immediate action from the government to appoint a competent full-time Chairman and ensure the prompt announcement of pending results.
He emphasized the importance of accountability in such negligence and urged the government to prioritize the interests of students in making decisions regarding educational institutions like JKBOSE.
It is essential for the government to understand the significance of timely actions in the education sector and avoid further delays that could harm the future of students.
