Lok Sabha to Discuss Union Budget 2026-27
On Friday, the Lok Sabha is set to engage in a general discussion on the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. The session will commence at 11 am with government business, starting with the Question Hour. Various Union Ministers, including those from the Health and Family Welfare, Law and Justice, External Affairs, Defence, and Ports, Shipping and Waterways ministries, are expected to present papers on the table.
Later in the day, from 3.30 pm onwards, the Lok Sabha will shift its focus to Private Members’ Business. Several Private Members’ Bills are on the agenda for introduction, covering a wide array of topics such as Constitution Amendment Bills, amendments to the Representation of the People Act, welfare-related Bills for different sectors like farmers, fishermen, students, senior citizens, women, and workers, as well as Bills related to education, healthcare, environment, artificial intelligence, digital platforms, labour reforms, and social security.
During the previous day’s Parliament session, opposition members, including Congress MPs, staged a protest following a dispute over LoP Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s inability to reference the unpublished memoir of former Army Chief General MM Naravane regarding the 2020 China standoff. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Rajya Sabha on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address.
PM Modi took the opportunity to criticize the Congress party in the Rajya Sabha, particularly condemning a controversial “traitor” remark aimed at BJP MP Ravneet Singh Bittu. He described the remark as an insult to the Sikh community and a manifestation of the Congress party’s “arrogance at its peak.”
The ongoing Budget session consists of 30 sittings spread across 65 days, concluding on April 2. A recess is scheduled from February 13 to March 9 to allow Standing Committees to scrutinize the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments.
