Jammu Protesters Demand Revocation of MBBS Admission List
Dozens of protesters gathered outside Lok Bhavan in Jammu on Saturday to demand the revocation of the MBBS admission list of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Reasi, Kashmir. The protesters set ablaze an effigy of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, chanting “LG go back.” The protest, organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, saw the participation of various right-wing organizations, including JK BJP’s women activists and trade leaders like Arun Gupta.
The demonstration led to the blocking of the main road outside Lok Bhavan, causing traffic snarls and inconvenience to commuters for over one-and-a-half hours. Police presence was increased to maintain order and manage the crowd, which attempted to enter the complex.
Samiti convener Colonel Sukhvir Singh Mankotia emphasized that the protest was about ensuring seats in the medical college are reserved for Hindu students. He clarified that the issue was not about discriminating against students of other religions but upholding the faith of the Hindu community.
Mankotia highlighted the demand for the closure of the medical college if reservations for Hindu students could not be implemented. The controversy arose after the admission of 50 students, predominantly Muslim, through the NEET merit list.
The protests by right-wing Hindu groups led to the formation of the Sangarsh Samiti, which engaged in discussions with Lt Governor and central government leaders, including the Union health minister, to address the concerns raised.
