Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar Directs NHPC to Expedite Sediment Removal Operations at Salal Reservoir
During his recent inspection visit to NHPC’s Salal power project, Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, emphasized the need for expediting the sediment removal operations of the Salal reservoir. This directive was given to NHPC officials to ensure the efficient functioning of the power project.
As part of his two-day visit to review NHPC hydroelectric projects in the Union Territory of J&K, Khattar arrived in Jammu accompanied by Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India. The visit included inspections of projects located in Reasi, Ramban, and Kishtwar districts.
During the first day of his visit, Khattar visited Salal, Sawalkot, and Ratle power projects. Bhupendra Gupta, CMD, NHPC, briefed the Union Power Minister on the progress of various NHPC hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
At the Salal power project, Khattar was briefed on the ongoing sediment removal works. The project, situated on the Chenab river in Reasi district, is focused on removing accumulated silt to maximize the utilization of water resources, following the termination of the Indus Waters Treaty.
In addition to overseeing the project works, Khattar also initiated a plantation drive within the power station premises, highlighting the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Furthermore, discussions were held with local administration and senior officials to ensure coordinated efforts for timely execution of works. During an aerial inspection of the Sawalkot hydroelectric project and a visit to the Ratle hydroelectric project in Kishtwar, Khattar laid the foundation stone for dam concreting works, emphasizing the importance of completing the projects effectively and within the stipulated timeline.
