Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the Peoples Democratic Party, emphasized the importance of the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley, stating that Kashmir feels incomplete without them. She expressed eagerness for their comeback, highlighting the anticipation among the people for their return.
In a move to facilitate the return of Kashmiri Pandits, Mehbooba suggested the reservation of two Assembly seats for the community, emphasizing the significance of their participation in the political process.
During a press conference at the PDP headquarters in Gandhi Nagar, Mehbooba conveyed her sentiments towards the Kashmiri Pandit community, acknowledging their 36 years of exile and the recent protests advocating for their rehabilitation.
She also discussed her meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, proposing that instead of nominating members of the community to the Assembly, seats should be reserved for Kashmiri Pandits to ensure their representation.
Mehbooba emphasized the need for Kashmiri Pandits to return with dignity and reside alongside the Muslim community in Kashmir, promoting unity and inclusivity in the region.
Regarding the core agenda of the PDP, Mehbooba reiterated the party’s commitment to restoring peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir through dialogue, development, and unity among its regions.
She criticized the National Conference and BJP for misinterpreting her proposal for granting divisional status to Pir Panjal and Chenab valley, clarifying that the intention behind the demand was purely administrative to address the neglect of these regions.
Mehbooba highlighted the historical significance of dialogue in achieving peace in Jammu and Kashmir, referencing the efforts made during Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s tenure to engage in dialogue with various stakeholders.
She addressed the concerns raised by Farooq Abdullah regarding the divisional status proposal, emphasizing the administrative necessity of empowering the people in Pir Panjal and Chenab valley for better governance and development.
Mehbooba condemned the BJP’s portrayal of the proposal as aligning with a hidden agenda, asserting the party’s focus on addressing the needs of the people in Pir Panjal and Chenab valley for their benefit.
She also criticized the BJP for its actions in redrawing borders and seeking separate statehood, expressing a commitment to maintaining the unity and integrity of Jammu and Kashmir.
Furthermore, Mehbooba denounced the summoning of journalists to police stations in Srinagar, calling for accountability and condemning such actions.
