Jammu & Kashmir’s Handicraft Sector Continues to Thrive in FY 2025-26
Srinagar- As the Financial Year 2025–26 draws to a close, the handicraft sector of Jammu & Kashmir continues to demonstrate robust export performance, solidifying its position as a vital economic and cultural entity in the Union Territory.
Official data indicates that the first quarter of April–June 2025 saw a significant increase in export revenue, reaching 309.62 crore rupees, a 243% rise from the same period in FY 2024–25.
The second quarter, spanning July to September 2025, contributed over 100 crore rupees, bringing the total for the first half of the fiscal year to 410 crore rupees. The third-quarter data is awaited and expected to further boost the year-end export figures.
In the previous financial year (FY 2024–25), total handicraft exports stood at 733.59 crore rupees, affected by global conflicts and market disturbances.
Optimism surrounds FY 2025–26 as geopolitical tensions ease, potentially surpassing the export figures of the previous year.
Preserving a Heritage Economy
The rich tapestry of Kashmir’s handicrafts, including pashmina shawls, hand-knotted carpets, papier-mache products, and wood carvings, continues to sustain numerous artisans across the region, ensuring both livelihoods and cultural heritage.
Officials note sustained demand from markets in the Gulf, Europe, and North America, supported by enhancements in quality, product variety, and exploration of new market niches.
Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, Masrat Zia, emphasized the adaptability of artisans in the face of global challenges, incorporating eco-friendly practices and modern design elements while upholding Kashmir’s traditional craftsmanship.
Challenges and Strategies Ahead
Obstacles such as high logistics costs, competition from machine-made replicas, and the necessity for enhanced supply chain digitalization persist. The government is implementing cluster-based initiatives, artisan insurance schemes, and export facilitation measures to ensure long-term competitiveness.
Cultural Heritage with Global Reach
Export statistics not only signify economic progress but also underscore the enduring legacy of Kashmir’s heritage industry, its worldwide appeal, and the renewed confidence of artisans post-pandemic and market disruptions.
Stakeholders anticipate a strong finish to FY 2025–26, continuing the upward trajectory of Kashmir’s handcrafted legacy in global markets. (KNO)
