The Untapped Potential of Jammu and Kashmir’s Digital Future
By Faisal Kawoosa
The beauty of Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism industry is undeniable. It sustains livelihoods, nurtures local businesses, and fosters a sense of global connectivity in the region.
However, relying solely on pride is not enough to drive an economy, especially one as vibrant and eager as ours.
One year into the administration of Omar Abdullah, a crucial question arises: why hasn’t the digital sector been given the economic priority it deserves?
This is not a critique of the government’s overall performance, as that judgment lies with the citizens and experts. Rather, it is a call to action regarding a missed opportunity.
Even with current constraints, there was ample room to position Jammu and Kashmir as a prominent player in India’s digital landscape.
Every economy has its traditional sectors and emerging sectors. While sectors like tourism, agriculture, horticulture, and handicrafts are vital to our region, the digital industry demands deliberate attention and investment to flourish.
The digital realm presents a compelling case for Jammu and Kashmir. With modest capital, abundant human resources, affordable operational costs, and geographical advantages, the region holds immense potential for digital growth.
Despite these inherent strengths, the government has yet to establish a clear digital policy or recognize the sector’s potential as a sunrise industry.
As the global economy rapidly evolves, Jammu and Kashmir must not lag behind. The time to embrace the digital future is now.
