Jammu and Kashmir Government Unveils Comprehensive Cancer Control Strategy
The Health and Education Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Sakina Itoo, revealed in the Assembly on Wednesday, the government’s ambitious plan to implement a holistic cancer control strategy. This initiative will focus on enhancing infrastructure, building capacity, and fostering institutional partnerships to combat the disease effectively.
Collaboration with Leading Institutions
Minister Itoo disclosed that the cancer control plan will be executed in collaboration with prestigious organizations like NITI Aayog and the Indian Council of Medical Research. Additionally, strategic guidance from renowned institutions such as the Tata Memorial Centre will play a crucial role in shaping the strategy.
Preventive Healthcare Initiatives
As part of preventive healthcare measures, a vaccination drive targeting cervical cancer has been initiated for girls aged 9 to 15 years. Minister Itoo emphasized the interconnectedness of health, education, and social welfare sectors, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing public services despite financial constraints.
Infrastructure Development in Healthcare Sector
The minister outlined various ongoing healthcare infrastructure projects, including the establishment of a 300-bed facility at Government Medical College Jammu, a 250-bed facility at Government Medical College Bemina, and additional blocks at prominent hospitals in Srinagar. The government aims to bolster emergency response services by adding Advanced Life Support ambulances and deploying specialized vehicles in border areas.
Grassroots Healthcare Enhancement
Efforts to improve grassroots healthcare include upgrading clinics, expanding the healthcare workforce, and prioritizing preventive care, maternal health, and mental health services. Noteworthy achievements under the National TB Elimination Programme were also highlighted, with several panchayats declared TB-free across the Union Territory.
Education Sector Reforms
Significant reforms in the education sector, such as adjusting the academic session timeline, have led to improved academic performance in government schools. The minister reported high pass percentages in Class 10, Class 12, and Class 11 examinations. Recruitment drives for teaching and non-teaching positions are underway to bolster the education system.
