Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Implements National Sports Development Code of India, 2011
In a significant move aimed at revamping sports administration and safeguarding athletes’ interests, the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has initiated strict enforcement of the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011. This enforcement compels sports associations throughout the Union Territory to adhere to age, tenure, and governance regulations.
According to top officials of the J&K Sports Council, this initiative follows judicial scrutiny in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by former state badminton players. The PIL advocates for the enforcement of age and tenure norms outlined in the Sports Code.
The High Court’s Division Bench, led by Chief Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal, has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the non-compliance and failure of stakeholders, including the Sports Council and sports associations, to submit responses in the PIL.
As a result of the court’s firm stance, corrective measures are being expedited on the ground. The Sports Council has reportedly communicated a clear message that no office-bearer, regardless of political influence or past stature, will be permitted to flout the Sports Code.
The PIL petitioners raised concerns about several associations being led by individuals above the age of 70 for prolonged periods, contravening the Sports Code, 2011.
Officials have indicated ongoing scrutiny of sports bodies, emphasizing that compliance with the National Sports Code is mandatory for recognition, funding, and operational support.
As the Sports Council continues its efforts to enforce the Sports Code, it is evident that a significant transformation is underway in the sports administration landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
