Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Calls for Clarity on Restoration of Statehood
The President of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, Tariq Hameed Karra, has urged the central government to provide a clear timeline for the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory. Speaking during the motion of thanks on the Lt Governor’s address in the legislative assembly, Karra also proposed the formation of an all-party MLA panel to facilitate the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley.
He highlighted that the democratic process in J-K was reinstated only after the intervention of the Supreme Court, emphasizing that statehood is a crucial demand that needs to be addressed. Karra questioned the absence of any mention of statehood in the recent address by the Lt Governor, despite its significance.
The national leadership of the Congress party, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, has already raised the issue in Parliament and in a letter to the Prime Minister, emphasizing the immediate need for the restoration of statehood to J-K.
Karra raised a fundamental question to the central government, seeking clarity on the timeline for granting statehood. He emphasized the importance of understanding when and how this decision will be made, highlighting the impatience of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a subtle critique of the BJP, Karra noted that while the majority of the population is in favor of restoring statehood, there are some factions pushing for Jammu to become a separate state. He emphasized the historical consequences of such division, stressing the need for unity and communal harmony.
Furthermore, Karra pointed out the humanitarian issues that were overlooked in the Lt Governor’s address, specifically the rehabilitation of migrant Kashmiri Pandits and the challenges faced by refugees from 1947, 1965, and 1971.
He emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive plan for the dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits, highlighting the need for security, economic stability, and social rights to be ensured. Karra proposed the establishment of a standing committee to engage with the Kashmiri Pandit community and formulate a practical strategy for their safe return.
Regarding West Pakistani refugees, Karra advocated for the immediate implementation of the one-time package approved by the previous UPA government. He suggested the creation of a welfare board to address their long-standing issues, particularly related to land and settlement.
Overall, Karra’s address in the legislative assembly underscored the pressing need for clarity on the restoration of statehood, as well as the importance of addressing humanitarian concerns such as the rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits and West Pakistani refugees.
