Jammu and Kashmir: BJP MLA Sunil Sharma objects to Pir Panjal region reference
Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Sunil Sharma raised objections on Tuesday regarding the classification of Rajouri and Poonch districts as part of the Pir Panjal region. Sharma emphasized that there is no such designated region in Jammu and Kashmir, which he believes should be considered a unified entity.
During a chaotic session in the Assembly, Sharma faced criticism from members representing Rajouri and Poonch after the Speaker adjourned the House. Both the BJP and ruling alliance members exchanged accusations and engaged in heated debates.
Sharma expressed his concerns to reporters, stating, “Efforts to establish separate regional identities in Jammu and Kashmir threaten its historical and cultural unity.” When questioned about a demand for an apology from the ruling party, Sharma avoided a direct response and questioned the existence of the alleged region.
He suggested consulting historical and Puranic sources, referring to the area as the “Chandrabhaga division” in the past. Sharma accused certain parties of attempting to diminish or modify the region’s identity by promoting distinct regional names.
Highlighting the historical formation of Jammu and Kashmir through Maharaja Hari Singh’s efforts, Sharma emphasized the region as his legacy. He urged the government to officially address any reorganization or naming matters.
Sharma criticized the portrayal of Pir Panjal and Chenab valley as separate entities, cautioning against potential divisive outcomes. He emphasized the government’s responsibility in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Assembly and objected to ministers demanding apologies from the opposition during proceedings.
Accusing certain parties of pursuing self-serving political agendas, Sharma reiterated his stance on Jammu and Kashmir remaining a unified entity.
