An Indian Teacher Wins $1M Global Teacher Prize

An Indian teacher and activist, renowned for establishing numerous learning centers and painting educational murals in slums, was honored with the prestigious $1 million Global Teacher Prize in Dubai.
Rouble Nagi, the deserving recipient, graciously accepted the award during the World Governments Summit in Dubai, an esteemed annual gathering of global leaders.
Through her Rouble Nagi Art Foundation, she has successfully set up over 800 learning centers across India, catering to underprivileged children who lack access to formal education. These centers not only benefit out-of-school children but also provide additional support to those already enrolled in schools.
Aside from her educational initiatives, Nagi is also known for her vibrant murals that serve as educational tools, covering subjects like literacy, science, mathematics, and history.
The Global Teacher Prize, presented by the Varkey Foundation, was established by Sunny Varkey, the founder of the for-profit GEMS Education company, which operates numerous schools in Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE.
Utilizing the $1 million award, Nagi intends to establish an institute offering free vocational training to further empower individuals in need.
Nagi’s remarkable achievement marks her as the 10th recipient of the esteemed award, which was first introduced in 2015 by the foundation.
Previous winners of the Global Teacher Prize include a selfless Kenyan teacher who donated a significant portion of his earnings to the less fortunate, a Palestinian educator promoting non-violence among students, and a Canadian teacher who made a significant impact on Inuit students in a remote Arctic village. The most recent winner was Saudi educator Mansour al-Mansour, recognized for his efforts in assisting the disadvantaged in his country.
GEMS Education, also known as Global Education Management Systems, stands as one of the largest private school operators globally, reflecting Dubai’s growth, where private schools cater to the children of the expatriates contributing to the city’s thriving economy.
