Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar Visits Sri Lanka to Extend Support After Cyclone Ditwah
During his recent visit to Sri Lanka, Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar engaged in crucial discussions with key officials to reinforce India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in its recovery efforts post Cyclone Ditwah.
Jaishankar met with Sri Lankan Minister of Health, Nalinda Jayatissa, Labour and Deputy Finance Minister Anil Jayantha, and Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe to discuss the implementation of a reconstruction package and additional relief measures offered by India.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Jaishankar expressed his pleasure at meeting Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and reiterated India’s full support towards Sri Lanka’s rebuilding process.
The highlight of the visit was the joint inauguration of a 20-foot dual-carriageway Bailey Bridge in the Kilinochchi District by Jaishankar and Herath. This bridge, weighing 110 tonnes, was airlifted from India as part of Operation Sagar Bandhu.
Another significant milestone was the unveiling of a 120-foot dual carriageway Bailey Bridge in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in the Kilinochchi District. This bridge, also weighing 110 tonnes, was a crucial component of the reconstruction efforts following Cyclone Ditwah.
During a press statement after a meeting with Herath, Jaishankar disclosed India’s commitment of a USD 450 million reconstruction package for Sri Lanka. He emphasized the swift delivery of this aid to expedite the recovery process in the affected areas.
As a Special Envoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jaishankar conveyed a message to President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, expressing India’s dedication to assisting Sri Lanka in overcoming the challenges posed by Cyclone Ditwah. The commitment of USD 450 million aims to facilitate the reconstruction efforts and provide essential support to the country.
