The Closure of Vaishno Devi Medical College: A Questionable Decision
Renowned political figure and former Union minister, Karan Singh, has recently raised concerns over the controversial decision to shut down Vaishno Devi Medical College. In his address to the public in Jammu, Dr. Karan Singh criticized the move, labeling it as unjustified and detrimental to the educational, employment, and future academic prospects in the Jammu region.
Dr. Karan Singh emphasized the importance of expanding access to higher education, especially at a time when educational opportunities should be on the rise rather than diminishing. He highlighted the potential of the medical college to cater to a growing number of local students, particularly the Dogra youth, in the upcoming years.
Despite refraining from engaging in political debates, Singh stressed that the closure of an educational institution should never be a cause for celebration. He emphasized that besides being a center for learning, the college also served as a crucial source of employment and regional pride.
Expressing his disappointment, Dr. Karan Singh lamented the loss of opportunities for future students, which would have only expanded over time. He pointed out that more students from the region could have benefited from the institution in the succeeding academic cycles.
Dr. Karan Singh also voiced his concerns regarding the politicization of the issue, asserting that decisions related to education should prioritize long-term public interest and social responsibility over political narratives. He emphasized the need for a more thoughtful and objective approach to educational matters. [KNT]
