PDP Leader Iltija Mufti Protests Against Proposed Bijbehara–Pahalgam Rail Line
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti took a stand on Thursday against the proposed Bijbehara–Pahalgam rail line, expressing concerns over the potential impact on the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and the fragile ecosystem of south Kashmir.
The protest, led by Mufti, was held at Wulurhama village in the Pahalgam area of Anantnag district, where several villages are likely to be affected by the railway alignment.
Residents from neighboring villages joined Mufti in the protest, voicing their worries about the potential impact on their orchards, paddy fields, and homes due to the proposed rail line passing through their lands.
Speaking at the protest, Mufti highlighted the importance of agriculture and horticulture in Kashmir’s economy and emphasized the potential negative effects of large-scale land acquisition on the region’s unemployment crisis.
Mufti raised concerns about the proposed rail line passing through villages like Wulurhama, Dirhama, Adlach, Joibal-Veeri, Trail, and Hanumanpora, cutting across vital agricultural lands and residential areas, causing uncertainty among residents about their future.
She also pointed out the environmental risks associated with the project, citing the fragile ecological balance in Jammu and Kashmir and the potential for environmental disasters if the rail line is constructed as planned.
Calling for a more inclusive approach that considers the concerns of local communities, Mufti urged the central government and railway authorities to explore alternative routes that do not involve the acquisition of fertile agricultural land.
Highlighting the PDP’s commitment to addressing the issue, Mufti announced plans to engage with the Railway Ministry to seek a review of the proposed alignment and criticized the ruling National Conference (NC) government for its perceived silence on issues affecting locals.
Emphasizing the need for sustainable development that prioritizes people’s livelihoods and environmental protection, Mufti stressed the importance of a humane and balanced approach to infrastructure projects in the region.
Overall, the protest led by Iltija Mufti underscores the growing concerns among residents of south Kashmir about the potential impact of the proposed rail line on their lives and the environment, highlighting the need for a more inclusive and sustainable development strategy in the region.
