Gurez Witnesses Steady Rise in Tourist Arrivals, Focus on Waste Management
The government of Jammu & Kashmir recently revealed that Gurez, an ecologically sensitive region, has experienced a significant increase in tourist arrivals in recent years. In response to a query by MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan, the Minister Incharge of the Department of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj highlighted the measures taken to enhance sanitation and waste management in the area.
According to official data, Gurez has seen a consistent growth in tourist footfall, with 40,105 visitors in 2022, 48,797 in 2023, and a substantial 1,11,613 in 2024. The trend continues in 2025, with 54,675 arrivals already recorded.
To address concerns regarding sanitation, the government has implemented various initiatives to improve waste management infrastructure. These efforts include the construction of community compost pits, soakage pits, and waste segregation sheds, as well as the implementation of regular door-to-door solid waste collection.
The government is also working on setting up a Plastic Waste Management Unit and has installed twin-pit dustbins at strategic locations, such as along the banks of the River Kishenganga, to ensure proper disposal and discourage littering.
It is strictly prohibited to dump garbage into the Kishenganga, and both residents and commercial establishments are urged to refrain from such practices. The government is committed to preserving the fragile ecology of Gurez through enhanced waste collection and segregation systems, sanitation interventions in Dawar town, placement of dustbins at high-traffic areas, and the development of sustainable community assets.
Additionally, awareness and sensitization programs are being conducted regularly to educate residents, shopkeepers, and tourists about responsible waste disposal and the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness in the region.
By focusing on sustainable tourism practices and environmental conservation, the government aims to ensure the long-term preservation of Gurez’s natural beauty and ecological balance. It is crucial for all stakeholders to contribute towards maintaining the pristine environment of this picturesque destination.
