Deadly Drone Attack Claims 28 Lives in Ukraine
Kyiv, Jan 03: The tragic aftermath of a drone attack on a cafe and hotel in Ukraine’s Kherson Region of Khorly has left 28 civilians dead, according to Governor Vladimir Saldo. The devastating incident, as reported by TASS, saw three more individuals succumb to their injuries in the hospital, bringing the total death toll to 28. Over 100 people were present in the cafe during the attack, with more than 60 suffering injuries, Saldo revealed.
Saldo disclosed that the attack occurred on January 1 during a New Year gathering of civilians. As a result, 31 individuals, including five children, were rushed to hospitals for treatment, as detailed by TASS. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy alleged that Kharkiv was struck by two missiles originating from Moscow.
In a statement shared on X, Zelenskyy strongly condemned Russia’s assault on Kharkiv, emphasizing the targeting of a residential area and the subsequent extensive damage caused. “A heinous Russian strike on Kharkiv. Preliminary reports suggest that two missiles hit a regular residential zone, resulting in severe damage to one of the buildings. Rescue operations are actively underway with all necessary emergency services on site,” Zelenskyy expressed.
Zelenskyy further highlighted that the full extent of casualties remains uncertain at this point. On the contrary, Russia’s Defence Ministry refuted claims of a strike on Kharkiv, dismissing them as false, according to Sputnik. The ministry categorically denied any Russian military involvement in missile or air strikes within the city on January 2.
“The Kiev regime’s assertions regarding the alleged ‘Russian strike on Kharkov’ are meant to divert global attention from the appalling terrorist attack carried out by Ukrainian armed forces against civilians in Khorly, Kherson Region, on the night of January 1,” the statement from the ministry clarified.
