Zojila Tunnel Progress and Other Major Tunnel Projects in Jammu and Kashmir
The Economic Survey Report 2025–26 has revealed that the Zojila Tunnel, spanning 13.15 km, has achieved approximately 59% physical progress and is anticipated to be finished by 2027–28. This tunnel, along with other major tunnel projects in Jammu and Kashmir, is part of initiatives under the Prime Minister’s Development Package and National Highway schemes to enhance all-weather road connectivity in the region.
One of the completed projects mentioned in the report is the Sonamarg (Z-Morh) Tunnel, which is 6.5 km long and connects the Srinagar–Sonamarg stretch of NH-01. This tunnel, completed in July 2024 at a cost of Rs 2,379 crore, ensures year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, benefiting civilians and security forces as it eliminates the seasonal closure of the Srinagar–Leh road due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.
Other tunnel projects such as Panthal–Magarkote, Digdole–Khooni Nallah, Jammu Ring Road, Bimber Gali, and Sungal are at various stages of construction, with Kundi and Naushera Tunnels already completed. The completion of these projects will strengthen road infrastructure, improve traffic flow, and boost economic and strategic development in Jammu and Kashmir.
