From a Tennis Court in Srinagar to Representing India: The Remarkable Journey of Mohammad Qais
Watching his 13-year-old son, Mohammad Qais, earn an India cap is a poignant moment for Aijaz Sofi, as it represents the realization of a dream that originated on a solitary tennis court in Srinagar many years ago. Qais has been selected to represent India at the upcoming 2nd Asian Junior Soft Tennis Championship 2026, a prestigious event that will see participation from several countries, including Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, and Poland.
Expressing his emotions, Aijaz Sofi shared, “For a boy who is not even 14 to represent India, this is a very big achievement. It’s not just happiness, it is a moment I never imagined I would live to see.”
Reflecting on his own childhood in Dalgate and Buchwara, Aijaz recalled the limited access to sports facilities and how his passion for sports was ignited during his visits to the lone tennis court at the Amar Singh Club. Now, witnessing his son follow in his footsteps, Aijaz feels a sense of fulfillment, as if his own unfinished dream has found a new beginning through Qais.
Despite the sporting success, Aijaz emphasizes the importance of academics in Qais’s life, stating, “Sports are important, but education is necessary.” He highlighted Qais’s academic achievements, including scoring 92 percent in his studies and advancing to Class 9 at a school in Srinagar.
The Sofi household has been abuzz with celebrations as relatives, friends, and neighbors extend their congratulations to Qais. A three-time gold medallist at the district and UT levels, as well as a representative of J&K at national competitions, Qais’s journey to the international stage is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
Looking ahead, Aijaz remains grounded yet hopeful, stating, “To represent the country itself is a big thing. What comes next will come with hard work and Allah’s will.” As Qais prepares to showcase his talent on the international platform, his family stands by him, supporting his dreams and celebrating his achievements.
