Defending the House Arrest of Party Leaders: Farooq Abdullah Speaks Out
Farooq Abdullah, the National Conference president, recently spoke out in defense of the house arrest of party MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and other leaders. He emphasized that their intention to create “turmoil” would not be tolerated.
During a conversation with reporters at Pahalgam in south Kashmir, Abdullah stated that these leaders seemed discontent with the progress Jammu and Kashmir was making. He highlighted the fact that they may not appreciate the state’s advancements and instead desire chaos, which he firmly stated would not be permitted.
The recent house arrests, which included leaders like Mehdi, PDP MLA Waheed Para, former Srinagar mayor Junaid Mattoo, and PDP leader Iltija Mufti, were implemented to prevent their involvement in protests against the current reservation policy.
Abdullah also shared his hopes for peaceful elections in Bangladesh, expressing optimism for the formation of a new government that would foster friendly relations with India.
The leaders were placed under house arrest after expressing solidarity with students planning a peaceful protest at Gupkar Road and voicing their support for addressing the delay in rationalizing the quota policy. This delay occurred despite Chief Minister Omar Abdullah forming a committee a year ago to tackle the issue.
Waheed Para expressed disappointment over the house arrests, viewing them as an attempt to hinder their support for the protesting students. Meanwhile, National Conference MP Ruhullah Mehdi took to social media to raise concerns about armed police stationed outside his residence, questioning if this was an attempt to suppress a peaceful demonstration.
