Cyber Fraud: A Growing Threat in Jammu and Kashmir

By Mohammad Hanief
In recent days, a disturbing trend has emerged in Jammu and Kashmir, where cyber scams are on the rise, preying on fear, authority, and gaps in digital literacy.
One such incident involved an elderly couple in Srinagar who fell victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud, losing a staggering ₹48 lakh of their life savings in a series of fraudulent transactions.
The scam started with WhatsApp video calls from individuals posing as high-ranking officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, accusing the couple of money laundering and illegal financial activities.
Under constant pressure and threat of arrest, the couple succumbed to the scammers’ demands, transferring large sums of money into accounts controlled by the fraudsters.
After realizing they had been duped, the couple reported the incident to the authorities, leading to an investigation that uncovered the elaborate scheme behind the cyber fraud.
Police reiterated the importance of being vigilant and aware of such scams, emphasizing that government agencies do not conduct investigations or seek financial information over phone calls or social media.
This case is just one example of the growing menace of cybercrime in Kashmir, where individuals are falling prey to various forms of financial fraud, phishing schemes, and online scams.
Experts warn that the psychological manipulation tactics used by scammers, combined with the lack of digital literacy among certain segments of the population, make it easier for fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting victims.
It is crucial for individuals to be cautious and proactive in protecting themselves from cyber threats, including verifying any suspicious claims with trusted sources before taking any action.
Early reporting of such incidents can help authorities track and freeze fraudulent accounts before the money is irretrievably lost.
Law enforcement agencies have been stepping up their efforts to combat cyber fraud, with specialized training for officers, improved coordination with financial institutions, and enhanced public awareness campaigns.
Despite these measures, the onus is on individuals and families to educate themselves about online safety and take necessary precautions to safeguard their financial assets.
As digital transactions become more prevalent in daily life, staying informed and vigilant is the best defense against falling victim to cyber fraud.
