Srinagar Speaker to Investigate Allegations of PDP MLA Using Microphone in Assembly
In a recent development, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Abdul Rahim Rather has announced his intention to investigate allegations made by National Conference MLAs regarding PDP legislator Waheed‑ur‑Rehman Para’s use of a microphone during House proceedings.
During a session in the Assembly, Rather, in response to claims raised by NC MLA Altaf Wani, stated that the Assembly Secretariat would look into the matter and appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the Rules. “I will personally look into this matter,” the Speaker asserted. Wani had pointed out Para’s utilization of a microphone, which he allegedly passed on to his party colleague Muntazir Mehdi.
Expressing disappointment at such actions, the Speaker condemned them as childish and undermining the House’s dignity. “It is regrettable. Should I consider implementing security checks for members of the House?” he questioned.
However, PDP MLA Mir Muhammad Fayaz refuted the accusations, prompting the Speaker to urge him not to defend the indefensible. Furthermore, Kaloo, another MLA, requested the Speaker to compare the speeches delivered by Para and other legislators to discern any discrepancies.
It is evident from the proceedings that tensions are running high in the Assembly, with allegations and counter-allegations being exchanged between members. The Speaker’s decision to investigate the matter reflects a commitment to upholding transparency and accountability within the legislative body.
