New York City Mayor Opposes US Military Capture of Venezuelan President Maduro
Recently sworn-in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has taken a strong stance against the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by the US military, labeling it as an “act of war.” Mayor Mamdani revealed that he directly contacted President Donald Trump to express his opposition to this unilateral attack on a sovereign nation.
The Venezuelan president and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been indicted in the Southern District of New York and are set to face charges in New York City. Mamdani emphasized the impact of such actions on New Yorkers, particularly the Venezuelan community residing in the city, stating that “Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law.”
US Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced that Maduro has been charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess such weapons against the US. Bondi commended President Trump for demanding accountability and praised the military for successfully capturing the alleged international narco traffickers.
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, a senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, criticized President Trump for using military force without Congressional authorization. He highlighted the dangers of asserting US control over another sovereign nation, stating that such actions undermine the Constitution’s separation of powers and erode the rule of law.
It is imperative for the Trump Administration to account for the safety of US personnel, disclose any casualties, and provide a full briefing to Congress. Krishnamoorthi warned that the claimed control over Venezuela could have far-reaching consequences, weakening America’s credibility and making Americans less safe in the long run.
