Kashmir Valley Braces for Cold Wave
As winter tightens its grip, the Kashmir Valley is experiencing a severe cold wave, with sub-zero night temperatures becoming the norm across the region. According to officials, the picturesque tourist resort of Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district recorded the lowest temperature in Jammu and Kashmir, plummeting to a bone-chilling minus 10.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night.
Gulmarg, another popular tourist destination in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, saw a slight improvement in night temperatures, settling at a low of minus 7.6 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced a relatively milder night at minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, a significant increase from the previous night’s minus 4 degrees Celsius.
Further south, Pahalgam, famous for its stunning landscapes, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 7.2 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, reported a minimum temperature of 0.1 degrees Celsius. Kokernag and Kupwara experienced lows of minus 2.3 and minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The region is currently observing ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’, a 40-day period characterized by extreme cold, where night temperatures frequently plummet below freezing, increasing the likelihood of snowfall. Despite the harsh conditions, the plains of the valley have yet to witness any significant snowfall this season.
Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department forecasts dry but cloudy weather in the region until January 20. As residents and tourists alike bundle up to combat the cold, the valley remains a picturesque winter wonderland, offering breathtaking views and unique experiences amid the frosty chill.
