Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Schools Shine at Wipro Earthian Awards 2025
Four schools from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have made their mark by clinching the prestigious Wipro Earthian Awards 2025. The winners were announced at the 15th edition of the program organized by Wipro Limited at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru.
The Wipro Earthian program is an annual initiative that promotes comprehensive sustainability education and acknowledges schools and colleges in India that exhibit meaningful and long-term involvement with environmental issues. This year, the program received over 2,000 entries, out of which 25 winning teams were selected by an independent jury. These projects showcased innovative approaches to biodiversity, waste management, and water conservation through hands-on research and reflective learning.
One of the standout winners was Druk Padma Karpo School in Shey, Leh, famously known as the “Rancho School” from the movie 3 Idiots. Their project focused on studying Ladakh’s escalating waste crisis by exploring urban and rural waste systems, engaging with local NGOs, and creating various awareness campaigns like comics, data visualizations, and essays.
Government Girls Higher Secondary School Nishat documented biodiversity on their campus and in Dachigam National Park, emphasizing the critical role of biodiversity in food security, climate regulation, and soil health. They advocated for sustainable practices such as conservation and afforestation.
Students from Government Higher Secondary School B.K. Pora conducted a biodiversity survey around their school, highlighting the ecological importance of small green spaces and fostering environmental responsibility.
The fourth winner, PM Shri Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, studied traditional and modern water-conservation systems in Nubra and Zanskar, showcasing Ladakh as a model of climate resilience.
The winning teams were awarded certificates and cash prizes by Anurag Behar, CEO of Azim Premji Foundation, and Narayan P. S., Global Head of Sustainability at Wipro Limited. Narayan P. S. commended the students for their curiosity, rigor, and empathy in tackling environmental challenges.
