New Delhi to Implement On-Screen Marking for CBSE Class 12 Answer Books
In a significant development, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the introduction of on-screen marking (OSM) for the evaluation of Class 12 answer books starting this year. This move aims to enhance efficiency and transparency in the evaluation process, as confirmed by officials.
While Class 12 answer books will now be evaluated through on-screen marking, the evaluation of Class 10 answer books will continue in the traditional physical mode, as per the officials.
CBSE Examination Controller, Sanyam Bhardwaj, stated, “In its continuous efforts to improve efficiency and transparency, the board has decided to introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for the evaluation of Class 12 answer books from the upcoming 2026 examinations. However, the evaluation of Class 10 answer books will remain in physical mode in 2026.”
This shift to on-screen marking is expected to streamline the evaluation process, reduce manual intervention, and eliminate totalling errors, according to the official. It will also enable faster evaluation with wider teacher participation, as teachers can evaluate answer scripts from their own schools.
Additionally, the move will eliminate the need for post-result verification of marks, reduce manpower requirements for verification, and allow for the involvement of teachers from all affiliated schools globally in the evaluation process.
Schools have been instructed to ensure that they have computer labs with specific system specifications, a reliable internet connection, and uninterrupted power supply for the evaluation process. Non-compliance with these directives may lead to consequences for the schools.
Bhardwaj emphasized, “Schools must update data on teachers teaching these classes on an online portal. Failure to comply with the board’s instructions will be considered an attempt to disrupt the evaluation process, and the school’s results may not be declared.”
It is worth noting that CBSE conducts Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations annually in India and across 26 countries, serving nearly 46 lakh students.
