Indian Karting Prodigy Atiqa Mir Secures Drive with Modena Racing Team
La Conca, Jan 24: At just 11 years old, Atiqa Mir has achieved a remarkable milestone in her racing career by securing a coveted drive with the reigning world champions, Modena Racing Team, for the upcoming 2026 season of the prestigious WSK championship. Often referred to as the ‘Formula 1’ of karting, the WSK championship is known for attracting top talent from around the world.
Unlike many of her peers, Atiqa has chosen to compete in the highly competitive junior category (ages 12-14) this season, showcasing her determination and skill at a young age.
Following her impressive performances in the mini category (ages 8-12) last year, Atiqa, a driver supported by the Formula 1 Academy, has been signed for the entire season. She will be competing in prestigious events such as the WSK Super Master Series, WSK Euro Series, WSK Final Cup, and other championships.
Notably, Atiqa will make history as the first Indian female driver to compete in the OKNJ category in WSK. Additionally, she will be the only female on the grid among 37 world-class drivers, highlighting her trailblazing journey in the sport.
The WSK series represents the pinnacle of karting, attracting elite drivers and leading manufacturers in the industry. It serves as a crucial platform for young talents like Atiqa to hone their racing skills, technical knowledge, and overall understanding of motorsport.
Several Formula 1 world champions, including Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Sebastian Vettel, have honed their skills in the WSK series during their formative years, underscoring the series’ significance in shaping future racing stars.
Transitioning to the OKNJ junior category from the mini category presents a significant challenge for Atiqa. With more powerful engines, higher speeds, and increased G forces, she will be tested against the best drivers in the world. However, Atiqa remains undaunted and ready to rise to the occasion.
Expressing her excitement, Atiqa stated, “I am thrilled and grateful to join Modena Racing Team. Competing alongside reigning world champions in this class is a tremendous honor. I look forward to the tough competition and learning opportunities that WSK offers. The level of driving in WSK is unparalleled, and I am eager to improve and grow as a driver.”
Atiqa’s father, Asif Mir, India’s first National Karting Champion, emphasized the decision to propel Atiqa into the junior class as a strategic move for her development. He believes that challenging her in the higher category will contribute to her long-term goal of reaching Formula 1.
Asif Mir remarked, “We are pushing Atiqa to excel by placing her in the junior class. While she could have continued winning races in the Mini category, our focus is on her progression towards Formula 1. She possesses the physical fitness to handle the demands of the sport, and I anticipate a year of significant growth and learning for her.”
Atiqa will kick off her campaign on January 25 with the WSK Super Master Series Round 1 in La Conca, Italy, marking the beginning of an exciting chapter in her racing journey.
