Boosting Railway Development in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: The recent railway budget announcement by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has solidified the commitment to enhancing railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. The allocation for railway development in the region has seen a significant increase, with an annual average of Rs. 1,086 crore earmarked for the fiscal year 2026-27, compared to Rs. 1,044 crore allocated during the period of 2009-2014.
According to officials, this increased funding has been instrumental in driving various infrastructure projects, with ongoing works totaling Rs. 522 crore spread across the Union Territory. These initiatives primarily focus on station redevelopment and safety enhancements aimed at fortifying the rail network.
As part of the Amrit Station Scheme, four railway stations in Jammu and Kashmir have been identified for comprehensive redevelopment. A substantial investment of Rs. 293 crore has been set aside for station modernization, aiming to enhance passenger amenities and overall travel experience.
Furthermore, the region has witnessed an expansion in rail connectivity with the introduction of premium train services. Presently, five pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains are in operation, bolstering travel efficiency along crucial routes.
The past decade has seen a rapid expansion of the railway network in Jammu and Kashmir. Since 2014, approximately 150 km of new railway tracks have been laid down in the region. Additionally, the area has achieved complete railway electrification, with 407 km of rail lines electrified during the same period.
Moreover, railway infrastructure development efforts encompass the construction of six flyovers and underpasses to enhance safety and streamline rail-road movement.
