Indian Cricket Board Asks Kolkata Knight Riders to Release Mustafizur Rahman Ahead of IPL 2026
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has requested Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad prior to the upcoming IPL 2026 edition. This decision comes amidst escalating tensions in the bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.
Kolkata Knight Riders had secured Rahman for Rs 9.20 crore during the player auction, outbidding Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. BCCI stated that KKR has the option to name a replacement player if necessary.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed, “The BCCI has asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from its squad. They can ask for replacement, if needed. And upon request, BCCI will allow a replacement player.”
The move to release Rahman was influenced by recent events that have strained ties between the two nations.
Mustafizur Rahman has been a part of eight IPL seasons since 2016, representing teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. The 2026 edition would have marked his debut with Kolkata Knight Riders.
Bilateral Cricket Uncertainty
India and Bangladesh had postponed a white-ball series last year, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board now scheduling it for September 2026. However, the BCCI remains non-committal due to the volatile political climate in Bangladesh.
Relations between the two countries soured after the removal of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, leading to diplomatic tensions and security concerns. The transition in Bangladesh’s leadership has reshaped its diplomatic stance, impacting regional dynamics.
India and Bangladesh are navigating through a complex phase in their relationship, further complicated by engagements with other regional players like Pakistan.
