Boosting Farmers’ Income: India Allows Export of Wheat to Stabilize Markets
Amid efforts to support farmers and ensure stable domestic markets, the Indian government has granted approval for the export of 25 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat, in addition to 5 LMT of wheat products. This move is aimed at providing better returns to producers while maintaining market stability.
As per a recent statement from the Consumer Affairs Ministry, the availability of wheat stocks held by private entities for the year 2025–26 is estimated to be around 75 LMT. This figure reflects a significant increase of 32 LMT compared to the same period last year, indicating a surplus in the supply of wheat in the country.
The ministry further emphasized that the total wheat availability in the central pool managed by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) is projected to be approximately 182 LMT by April 1, 2026. This ample supply ensures that granting export permissions will not compromise India’s domestic food security needs.
