Jammu & Kashmir Government Plans to Introduce Bill on Drug Abuse
In a recent development, the Jammu & Kashmir Government has announced its intention to present a bill addressing drug abuse during the ongoing session of the Legislative Assembly. Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakina Itoo, confirmed that the bill has been meticulously prepared and will soon be tabled for discussion in the House.
During a session in the Legislative Assembly, Minister Itoo responded to concerns raised by NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq, who had previously proposed a bill focusing on drug abuse education in schools. Tanvir revealed that he had withdrawn his bill based on the government’s assurance to address the issue.
Furthermore, Minister Itoo disclosed that the government is actively working on finalizing drug de-addiction rules. She mentioned, “We have formulated the drug de-addiction rules and have submitted them to the Law Department for review.”
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Minister Itoo stated that a staggering 49,276 cases of drug abuse have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir since 2022. Among these cases, 16,759 individuals were registered in Kashmir, while 32,517 cases were reported in Jammu.
