Srinagar, known for its rich cultural heritage, has taken significant steps to preserve its traditional infrastructure as monuments. In a milestone moment, Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha inaugurated the redeveloped Amira Kadal Bridge on 20 January 2026. This historic bridge, spanning the River Jhelum and linking the traditional quarters of the city with Lal Chowk, has been a vital lifeline for Srinagar. The redevelopment, overseen by Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) at a cost of Rs 7.70 crore, showcases a thoughtful blend of heritage conservation and modern urban design.
The pedestrian wooden bridge, originally built by the Dogras in the 19th century, holds immense historical and cultural significance. Named after Amar Singh, the brother of Maharaja Pratap Singh, the bridge has witnessed Srinagar’s evolution into a dynamic urban center. Its redevelopment honors this legacy while enhancing safety, aesthetics, and utility.
Under the leadership of Manoj Sinha, the construction of the wooden bridge was meticulously carried out in 2023. The Lieutenant Governor emphasized the importance of preserving the city’s cultural identity while upgrading infrastructure to improve quality of life.
During the inauguration ceremony, Shri Manoj Sinha highlighted the administration’s mission to protect the essence of every city while enhancing infrastructure. He stressed the significance of blending modern amenities with cultural heritage to create contemporary yet traditional urban environments.
The redevelopment of Amira Kadal symbolizes a bridge between the past and the present, reflecting a broader vision of preserving cultural heritage while building resilience for the future. The initiative aims to create vibrant, inclusive, and community-oriented urban spaces that cater to both residents and tourists.
The redeveloped pedestrian bridge is expected to enhance accessibility and pedestrian movement in Srinagar’s bustling commercial zone, facilitating smoother foot traffic, improving shopping experiences, and boosting commercial activity. It will also provide a secure and pleasant walkway for residents and visitors, enhancing the overall urban experience.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, acknowledging the role of local businesses in sustaining the city’s vibrancy. The opening of the pedestrian bridge is set to support businesses by enhancing access and creating a welcoming environment for visitors.
The redevelopment of Amira Kadal Bridge signifies Srinagar’s evolution, blending tradition with modernity. As the bridge reopens to pedestrians, it embodies continuity, connectivity, and confidence in a city embracing its heritage while embracing a modern and inclusive future.
