Congress Leaders Detained During Peaceful Protest in Jammu
In a recent turn of events, several prominent Congress leaders and workers, including party general secretary Syed Naseer Hussain and Jammu and Kashmir unit chief Tariq Hameed Karra, were detained in Jammu. The police intervened as the Congress activists gathered for a march at the Maharaja Hari Singh park in support of the party’s “Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq” movement.
The demonstration aimed to address crucial issues like the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and the preservation of the “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram”. Among those detained were AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, working president Raman Bhalla, and AICC secretary Pargat Singh.
Despite planning a peaceful march towards the Lok Bhawan, the Congress workers were detained by police and held at the district police lines briefly. Former deputy chief minister Tara Chand, along with several other party leaders, were also among those detained.
Former minister Choudhary Lal Singh and his supporters faced a similar fate at the Parade Ground after taking a different route to reach the location.
Expressing disappointment with the BJP-led Centre, AICC in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir, Syed Naseer Hussain, criticized the government for neglecting the demand for the restoration of statehood. He emphasized the Congress’s unwavering support for the cause.
Tariq Hameed Karra commended the Congress cadre for their strong display of unity and vowed to continue the fight for the restoration of statehood. He also highlighted the protest against the Modi government’s replacement of MGNREGA with a new scheme.
The BJP-led Centre’s recent move to replace MGNREGA with the VB-G RAM G Act has sparked further discontent among the rural population. The Congress leaders called for immediate action to address the concerns of the people in Jammu and Kashmir.
