Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Emphasizes Tech-Driven Farming at Agri-Tech Mela
Srinagar- In a bid to enhance the global competitiveness of Jammu and Kashmir’s agricultural sector, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stressed the importance of improving both the quality and quantity of agricultural produce. This statement was made during the inauguration of GON’GUL-2026, the 11th AgriTech Mela at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir’s Shalimar Campus.
The event, themed “NextGen Agriculture: My Produce–My Price,” has brought together a diverse group of stakeholders including progressive farmers, agri-preneurs, start-ups, researchers, and youth innovators from the region. The focus is on showcasing innovative technologies and sustainable farming practices.
Key dignitaries including Ministers Sakina Itoo and Javaid Ahmad Dar, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Registrar Prof. Azmat Alam Khan, and other faculty members and scientists were present at the inaugural session.
During his visit to the mela, the Chief Minister interacted with over 100 stall owners representing agri-entrepreneurs and start-ups. The stalls showcased advanced irrigation systems, farm machinery, organic products, and value-added produce. Abdullah inquired about the enterprises and technological interventions showcased at the stalls.
In his address, Omar Abdullah commended the role of progressive farmers, scientists, and researchers in revolutionizing the agricultural landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized the significance of research and innovation in driving modernization and economic growth in the agricultural sector.
The Chief Minister underscored the importance of technology-driven and organic farming solutions in bolstering the rural economy. He highlighted the need for value addition, branding, and improved market linkages to ensure better returns for farmers.
Omar Abdullah also praised the university for its efforts in empowering farmers through research, field outreach, and innovation. He mentioned that platforms like GON’GUL provide opportunities for growers to engage with experts, explore new tools, and access emerging market prospects.
The AgriTech Mela will span three days with participation from farmers, agri-business firms, students, and researchers from the region.
