Over 60% Seats Vacant in J&K Colleges: Government Report

Srinagar- A recent report has revealed that over 61 percent of seats in Government Degree Colleges of Jammu and Kashmir remain unfilled, highlighting a concerning lack of student enrolments and raising questions about the higher education department’s efficiency.
Official data indicates that total admissions in the previous academic session reached 45,438, surpassing enrollment figures from previous years.
According to KNO, the government disclosed to the Legislative Assembly that the enrollment trend in Government Degree Colleges of Jammu and Kashmir has shown improvement in the recent admission session.
“The total admissions in the previous session reached 45,438, which is higher compared to previous years. However, the existing Government Degree Colleges in the UT have a combined sanctioned intake capacity of 1,16,767 seats,” the government stated.
Despite the positive trend, the admissions fall significantly below the available capacity of existing institutions.
The government has decided against establishing new Degree Colleges in Jammu and Kashmir at this time.
“Given the current scenario, there is no immediate need to open new Degree Colleges in the Union Territory,” the government confirmed.
The focus remains on maximizing existing infrastructure, improving academic facilities, boosting enrollment levels, and delivering quality education to students.
