Is Kashmir’s Saffron Industry Flourishing Despite Challenges?
Srinagar- The saffron industry in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed significant growth over the past five years, with the government reporting a production of over 90 metric tonnes. Contrary to claims of a decline in output, the Agriculture Minister highlighted the positive trends in productivity and farmer earnings under the National Mission on Saffron.

According to official figures, the saffron production in the region has been on the rise, with annual outputs ranging from 17.33 to 23.53 metric tonnes in recent years. The government emphasized that prior interventions have helped stabilize cultivation areas and improve productivity levels, leading to a more sustainable saffron industry.
Financially, the saffron growers have witnessed a significant increase in realizations, with prices soaring from Rs 80,000 per kg to nearly Rs 2.20 lakh per kg. The implementation of scientific post-harvest processes and e-auctions has further enhanced the quality and transparency of saffron trading.
Despite challenges such as floods and dry spells affecting output in certain years, the overall sector growth has been promising. The government highlighted the success of the Economic Revival of J and K Saffron Sector project and its positive impact on the industry.
Looking ahead, the government acknowledged the need for continued focus on irrigation and infrastructure development to sustain the growth trajectory of the saffron sector. With ongoing investments and strategic interventions, the future of Kashmir’s saffron industry appears bright and promising.
