Rajouri Girl Overcomes Odds to Shine in Cricket
Manvi Sharma, a 13-year-old from Dhangri village in Rajouri district, has defied all odds to make a mark in the world of cricket. Despite financial constraints and the lack of formal training facilities, Manvi’s journey from playing gully cricket in her village to representing the Jammu and Kashmir Under-15 girls’ team is truly inspiring.
Manvi’s cricketing journey began at the age of eight, playing with children of labourers in her village. Recognizing her talent, senior villagers encouraged her to pursue the sport seriously. With their support, she honed her skills by playing alongside village boys and setting up a makeshift turf at her residence.
Her hard work paid off when she earned a spot in the Jammu and Kashmir Under-15 girls’ team, competing in national-level championships. Despite being the only girl among male players at the district level, Manvi’s courage and competitive spirit have set her apart.
Supported by her parents, local supporters, and mentors, Manvi dreams of representing the National Girls Cricket Team one day. Senior cricketers in the district are ensuring her continued participation in local tournaments to further enhance her skills and exposure.
Renowned elder cricket player Mohinder Singh Tony praised Manvi’s exceptional talent and dedication to the sport, highlighting her ambition to represent the Indian cricket team at national and international levels. Former Ranji player Ankush Gupta expressed hope that Manvi receives ample opportunities to showcase her talent on a larger stage.
In a region known more for border tensions than sporting success stories, Manvi Sharma’s journey serves as a testament to the power of talent, determination, and community support in overcoming limitations. Her story is a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes everywhere.
