The Jammu and Kashmir government recently unveiled a comprehensive cancer control strategy aimed at enhancing infrastructure development, capacity building, and partnerships in the Union Territory. Health and Education Minister Sakina Itoo shared this development while addressing the Assembly, highlighting the significant expansion of medical infrastructure, diagnostic services, and emergency healthcare facilities across the region.
Collaborating with esteemed organizations such as NITI Aayog and the Indian Council of Medical Research, the government plans to roll out the cancer control strategy. Additionally, partnerships with reputed institutions like the Tata Memorial Centre will play a crucial role in managing the disease through strategic interventions and planning.
As part of preventive healthcare measures, a cervical cancer vaccination drive targeting girls aged 9 to 15 years has been initiated. Minister Itoo emphasized the interconnected nature of health, education, and social welfare, underscoring their impact on the overall quality of life in society.
Furthermore, the government aims to enhance healthcare at the grassroots level by upgrading clinics, augmenting the workforce, and focusing on preventive care, maternal health, and mental healthcare. In the education sector, investments are being made in teacher training and school infrastructure to ensure equal opportunities for students in rural areas.
Reforms in the education sector have also been implemented, such as the restoration of the academic session from March to November. This change has led to improved results in winter zone examinations, with government schools achieving pass percentages of 80% in Class 10, 84% in Class 12, and 83% in Class 11.
Addressing human resource management, Minister Itoo mentioned the recruitment process for lecturer vacancies, non-teaching posts, and multi-tasking staff positions. Promotions and appointments have been made to strengthen the education system, including the promotion of principals and in-charge Chief Education Officers.
Several hospital projects are underway, including the development of 300-bed facilities at Government Medical College Jammu and 250-bed facilities at Government Medical College Bemina, Srinagar. Emergency response services are also being bolstered with the addition of Advanced Life Support ambulances and specialized vehicles for border areas.
Under the National TB Elimination Programme, significant progress has been made, with 2,006 panchayats in the Union Territory declared TB free. The recruitment of medical officers through the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission and Services Selection Board further strengthens the healthcare system.
In conclusion, the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare, education, and social welfare services despite financial constraints is evident through these initiatives. The ongoing efforts reflect a dedication to improving the overall well-being of citizens and ensuring a strong and prosperous society.
