More NDPS-linked confiscations under scrutiny
A meeting of the District Level Committee on Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) was convened on Tuesday under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, at the Meeting Hall of the DC Office to assess the ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the district.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sandeep Chakravarthy, also participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, a thorough evaluation of inter-agency collaboration to tackle drug abuse was conducted, focusing on identifying drug hotspots, seizing vehicles under NDPS, and implementing anti-drug awareness campaigns, particularly in educational institutions to educate young individuals about the harmful effects of narcotics.
It was reported that, following the NCORD Committee’s directives, the District Administration, in conjunction with the Police and other relevant departments, has initiated a significant crackdown on drug dealers and traffickers. In response to offenders, the driving licenses of 73 individuals involved in drug-related cases have been revoked, with 56 vehicles being blacklisted by the Regional Transport Office, Kashmir, under the NDPS Act.
Addressing the gathering, the DC commended the Transport Department and other stakeholders for reinforcing administrative controls by suspending licenses and blacklisting vehicles implicated in NDPS cases, thereby disrupting the logistical support of drug dealers. He stressed that driving licenses and vehicle registrations are privileges, not rights, and individuals misusing them for drug offenses will face severe repercussions without leniency.
The DC emphasized the continuation of such measures to combat the drug problem in the district and dismantle the narcotics supply chain. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to safeguard society, particularly the youth, from the detrimental effects of drugs.
SSP Srinagar, in his address, affirmed the ongoing actions against drugs and reiterated the policy of zero tolerance towards drug-related offenses. He warned that drug dealers would be subject to criminal prosecution, license disqualification, vehicle blacklisting, and other lawful punishments.
During the meeting, it was decided to enhance coordination among relevant departments and sustain focused enforcement, preventive awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation programs to effectively address the drug issue in Srinagar district.
The meeting was attended by Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir, Qazi Irfan, Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mir Imtiyaz Ul Aziz, Dy Superintendent of Police, Syed Sleeth Shah, Programme Officer, ICDS, SDM West Irfan Bahadur, SDM East, Zubair Ahmad, District Social Welfare Officer, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Adnan Tariq, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tahir Sajad, and Officers of Excise, Drug Control Organization, YS&S, Heads of ATFs, and other concerned individuals.
